This is the first post on my blog. My reason for doing this is i suffer a skin condition called vitiligo and want to tell people about my experiences regarding UVB treatment for said condition.
Vitiligo as described in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitiligo) is "a
chronic skin disease that causes loss of
pigment, resulting in irregular pale patches of
skin."
I will also talk about other things that are going on in my life because i am self indulgent but i hope other people with vitiligo will be able to take some comfort from my experiences. It will also give people a good idea of how it fells to undergo the UVB treatment.
Who i am is not that important but where i am does have a bearing on the treatment. I was born in the UK and lived there from childhood till adulthood. I now live in Seoul in South Korea. I was diagnosed with vitiligo in the UK, when i was 15, and was told there is no cure or treatment for it. I moved to Korea in order to experience living abroad. I lived in a small city for a year and then moved to Seoul. I had given up hope of ever curing my vitiligo and instead made sure i wore sun block whenever it was sunny. Sure, sometimes i would feel bad about having vitiligo and feel ugly/like a freak/unlovable, but i always took heart that no matter how you look you can still have a positive impact in life. After all, there is so much beauty in life.
Anyway i was told by a friend there was a good dermatologist in Seoul who dealt with vitiligo. I waited a month for an appointment and attended with a good Korean friend of mine. I can't speak Korea so without my friend this wouldn't have been possible. The doctor recommended me for the UVB light treatment. So from then on i have been put in a UVB chamber and been zapped with UVB light, for no more than two minutes, twice a week.
My plan is to tell you about any side effects and my experiences.
